This textbook builds on the successful beginner's course. The standard language taught is based on spoken language in the dialogues, while the reading texts provide access to written language as it is used in areas such as the press, culture, and literature. In 17 lessons, everyday situations like shopping, traveling, planning activities, official appointments, or doctor visits are covered, along with topics such as politics, geography, the status of the Arabic language, and Arab culture and civilization. Speaking skills and listening comprehension are emphasized. The grammar covered provides the linguistic tools for more complex forms of expression, such as references, temporal placement, and argumentation. Reading comprehension is practiced with practical texts like advertisements, as well as factual texts and simple literary works.
