Among the worst crimes of World War II are the mass rapes of German women and girls by Soviet soldiers in 1944/45. Many of these women and girls were sexually abused not just once, but many times. Neither children nor elderly women were spared. According to reliable estimates, around two million women and girls fell victim to these rapes. The enormous scale of these crimes and the human suffering they caused have not received adequate public attention for decades. Only recently have these events been mentioned more frequently, but almost always only as part of a narrative about flight, displacement, and forced labor. In contrast, this book focuses exclusively on the rapes, addressing questions such as how and why these excesses occurred.
