Product details

Many today are no longer aware that the declaration of war by Italy against Austria over a hundred years ago also marked the end of the long-standing presence of the House of Habsburg in Italy. Through a series of wars, Austria had already lost large territories on the Apennine Peninsula in the 19th century; after World War I, Istria, Trento, Trieste, and even South Tyrol were ceded to Italy through the Treaty of Saint-Germain. This marked the end of the Habsburg story in Italy, which the author attempts to depict in a multifaceted manner. On his historical walk, richly documented with many color images, he discusses regions such as Lombardy, Naples, and Sardinia, which fell to Austria in 1713 as a result of the War of the Spanish Succession. At the same time, the Duchy of Mantua also came under Austrian control due to the extinction of the ruling family there.
