Middle and long-distance running is a relatively young discipline in women's sports in Kenya. After the first pioneers opened the way into the international running scene, more female athletes followed in their footsteps, leading to a large group of internationally celebrated Kenyan female runners since the 1990s. Since the beginning of the 21st century, a new trend has emerged in Kenyan women's sports: Kenyan female athletes are using sports to obtain scholarships at U.S. universities. This book examines Kenyan running culture from a gender perspective. It traces the development of women's sports in Kenya through the example of middle and long-distance running and situates it within its socio-cultural context. Special attention is given to the relationships between Kenya and the USA in the field of collegiate sports.
