Not everything is rational all the time and everywhere. Generally, people are much more interested in their own opinions than in the argumentative justification of those opinions. Arguing is, in fact, a much too exhausting endeavor to engage in unless absolutely necessary. In this sense, Kopperschmidt aims to awaken respect for a cultural achievement of society that seeks to replace violence with "the gentle violence of reason" (Brecht), thereby civilizing social coexistence. The author orients himself around several guiding questions: Why do we argue? How can argumentation theory become practical? What is ethically interesting about arguing?.
