Poverty alleviation refers to a bundle of economic and humanitarian measures aimed at permanently freeing people from poverty. The causes of poverty are changing trends in a country's economy. These causes include, in addition to lack of education, a high divorce rate, and a culture of poverty, also illiteracy, overpopulation, epidemic diseases such as AIDS and malaria, as well as environmental issues like insufficient rainfall. The poverty line is then defined as the amount of income required to meet these needs. Studies show that a 10 percent increase in a country's average income reduces poverty by 20-30 percent. It improves the management of water and other natural resources in a situation where most poor rural residents depend on agriculture or other natural resources for their livelihood.
