Product details

The colorful publication not only brings readers closer to the ceremony of mate consumption but also explores the economic and cultural aspects of yerba mate and its uniqueness as a folk culture in many parts of Latin America. Additionally, the author shares myths and legends surrounding mate and illustrates how mate has found its way into literature and music. Mate is an infusion drink primarily consumed in Argentina, Chile, Paraguay, and Uruguay. It can be enjoyed with or without sugar. There might be little special about it if it weren't served in a gourd from which it is sipped through a metal straw. It is prepared from yerba mate, leaves from a tree that is widely found in the northern part of the Argentine Republic, Paraguay, and the Brazilian states of Paraná and Santa Catarina. A number of therapeutic properties are attributed to it: it stimulates nerves, muscles, and metabolism, acts as a diuretic, promotes the production of saliva and gastric juices, thus aiding digestion, induces sweating, and, due to its caffeine content, energizes and strengthens circulation. Consuming mate is an extremely popular habit in many parts of Latin America, especially in the cities of the interior. In other parts of Latin America and in Europe, mate is consumed more within established circles. In Germany, mate is sold in almost every supermarket as tea bags and in many third-world shops as Brazilian yerba.
