Das Wintermärchen / The Winter's Tale
English, German, William Shakespeare, 2008Product details
Act 20. Comedy. King Leontes of Sicily desperately urges his childhood friend, King Polixenes of Bohemia, to extend his stay with him. It is only when Hermione, Leontes' wife, also asks him to stay that he decides to do so. This fills Leontes with such jealousy that he orders his courtier Camillo to murder Polixenes, whom he suspects of having an affair with Hermione. Camillo confesses his mission to Polixenes, and both flee to Bohemia. This confirms Leontes' suspicions. He throws Hermione into prison, refuses to acknowledge the child she gives birth to as his own, and has it abandoned by Antigonus. Even an oracle from Delphi, which confirms Hermione's innocence, does not convince Leontes. It is only when his son Mamillius dies from grief over the events and Hermione collapses as if dead upon hearing the news that Leontes begins to change.
