Speculative artworks are things in themselves that provide and display their own conditions of recognizability. They differ from other things in that they do not suggest that they can only be truthfully represented in one specific way. On the contrary, they leave no doubt that they can be interpreted in various ways. However, this openness to interpretation is limited by the works themselves. Thus, the volume provides the foundations for an aesthetics of new realism, which is novel in that it finally succeeds in recognizing the plural perspective of things in themselves. Art teaches us that the plural forms of appearance are properties of things in themselves. Things love to reveal themselves. This diagnosis is explored through individual analyses of artworks from various fields, countering Kant and all constructivism.
