From 1914 to 1922, Wilhelm Klemm was one of the most renowned lyricists in Germany. He became famous for his verses from the First World War, which he experienced firsthand as a field doctor on the Western Front starting in August 1914. During this time, he created his sober, diary-like poems that captured the events on the ground in a concise, concrete, and yet vivid manner. However, Klemm responded to the war not only with his poetry but also with precise prose. This prose consists of the many nearly daily letters he wrote to his young wife, Erna Kröner-Klemm, in Leipzig. In these letters, the grand lyrical images are already sketched out, supplemented and commented on by assessments of the situation, as well as by realistic narratives and reports on the war events. Thus, this correspondence, along with a selection of Klemm's war poems, presents a vast panorama of war experiences and disillusionment, which stands as one of the most significant testimonies of that time.
