More than 25% of the adult population in Western civilized countries develop arterial hypertension in the course of their lives. Although the relationship between the severity of hypertension on the one hand and morbidity and mortality on the other has been established textbook knowledge for decades, according to the latest studies, even today at most a quarter of affected patients are adequately treated.
