In this book, the authors, who have all been actively involved in equestrian sports and horse care for decades, discuss important fundamentals for the species-appropriate care of horses. The previously widespread belief that horses are purely utility animals that must adapt to the demands of equestrians is no longer valid today. The horse, which has been elevated to a sentient being, is not only protected from pain, suffering, and harm by animal welfare laws, but the guidelines of the Federal Ministry also increasingly grant it rights in terms of its use and care. Numerous court rulings compiled in this book support this. The authors explain the "basic rights" of horses in several places. Foremost among these is access to pasture with other horses. As a former steppe animal, pasture represents the most natural and currently most appropriate form of care.
