Ultrasound diagnostics, as a non-invasive examination technique, has already established a firm place in numerous fields of medicine. However, the peculiarities of ultrasound reflection from bony structures of the musculoskeletal system have delayed the adoption of this examination method in the orthopedic field. The increasing use of sonography for detecting damage to the soft tissue structures of the musculoskeletal system was prompted by R. Graf's studies, which successfully demonstrated the early sonographic detection of hip dysplasia. The further development of this examination technique is certainly not yet complete. Additional issues in orthopedics present opportunities for sonographic evaluation. The possibilities for application and the significance, as well as the technical requirements for the use of ultrasound diagnostics, will be discussed briefly.
