Product details

Piz Bernina - The highest mountain in Graubünden. Piz Bernina not only dominates the surrounding peaks and glaciers but also the thoughts and actions of many German-speaking climbers. Those who have ascended the Bernina are held in high regard, and those who have climbed its 4,049-meter summit via the North Ridge are regarded even more highly. The first to achieve this was the bold German Orientalist Paul Güssfeldt, along with his guides, on August 12, 1878. The account of this first ascent is a must-read in alpine literature. Also noteworthy is the report from the first climber from Graubünden: When Johann Wilhelm Fortunat Coaz and his assistants, the brothers Jon and Lorenz Ragut Tscharner, became the first people to reach the summit of Piz Bernina on September 13, 1850, at six o'clock in the evening, the mountain did not yet have a name. Coaz, who was working as a topographer on behalf of the Confederation, therefore named the highest peak.
