The therapeutic relationship between therapist and client is almost inevitably characterized by closeness and intimacy. This fundamentally creates the risk of dependencies with varying degrees of erotic influence, which Freud addressed in his 'Remarks on Transference Love' in 1914. Although the rule of abstinence excludes private relationships in general and any sexual contact with patients, 'abuse on the couch,' the 'working tool' of the psychoanalyst, as well as sexual misconduct in related fields of health and social services (medicine, psychiatry, pastoral care, social pedagogy) occurs relatively frequently. Empirical studies, for example in the USA and Germany, show that about one in two psychotherapists has had at least one patient in therapy who was abused by a colleague. This book addresses the topic.
