One hundred years ago, the German major offensive began the battle for the French fortress of Verdun. After World War I, the reality of the "original battle of the century" was processed in various forms - in historiography and documentary reporting as well as in literature, film, and visual arts. Depending on knowledge and experience, political views, and target audiences, there were very different representations of the historical events. One hundred years later, the question of the historical legacy of the battle of Verdun arises once again. Does the event mark a decisive turning point for Europe or even beyond? The memory of "Verdun" holds great significance not only for Germans and French people to this day; it carries considerable weight for the consciousness of Europe and its nations.
