The work addresses three different aspects of the phenomenon of questions: (a) question utterances, i.e., the linguistic forms of expression that can be used to realize questioning actions due to their syntactic and lexical properties; (b) the illocutionary and dialogical aspects of questioning actions. In detail, various sequence patterns that are initiated by questioning actions are examined. Another central subject is the description of specific sequence-dependent question types such as follow-up questions, clarifications, probing questions, counter-questions, and persistent questioning; (c) the verbs that can refer to questions and question sequences. This lexical-semantic analysis is conducted against the backdrop of the description of question sequences, thereby allowing for a nuanced representation of the relationship between linguistic actions and questioning.
