Unlike previously assumed, Asperger's syndrome and autism spectrum disorders have a prevalence of about 1% and are quite common. One reason for the increasing prevalence is the fact that more and more high-functioning individuals are being recognized and diagnosed as affected in adulthood. This raises the question of specific therapeutic options for this large group.
