The contributions of the book address the question of what 'society' means when nearly all areas of life are assisted. Whether it's a guide dog, a butler, an executive assistant, a pacemaker, a navigation system, a care robot, or ambient assisted living – we are assisted by other people and living beings, and increasingly by technologies and artifacts. These assistants take on a specific and new role: they protect us, they help us, they guide us. Processes of assistance in life and work environments are often driven by increasing promises of compensation and efficiency. But how does assistance manifest concretely? What interactions arise between the involved parties? And what societal dynamics and unintended consequences are associated with this? The anthology seeks to provide answers to these questions.
