Athanasius, Bishop of the Egyptian metropolis Alexandria (328-373), was at the center of the dogmatic and ecclesiastical controversies of the 4th century. As a steadfast representative of the decisions of the Council of Nicaea (325), he was venerated in the Greek East, the Latin West, and the Oriental national churches, although he was received very differently, as the extensive and so far scarcely explored corpus of writings later attributed to him shows. In the Western reception, Athanasius also became a witness against the Byzantine Church for the theological insertion of "filioque" into the Niceno-Constantinopolitan Creed, which traces back to Augustine. At the Council of Ferrara/Florence (1438/1439), which aimed for unity between the Latin, Greek, and Oriental churches, the Byzantines were confronted with e.
