Actually, the private scholar Georg Rentmeister had envisioned his trip from Berlin to Salzburg in 1937 quite differently. Torn away from his work on his new book, which deals with the significant topic of the subjunctive in the German language, Georg Rentmeister wants nothing more than to eagerly devote himself to the pleasures of the Salzburg Festival. What he does not suspect is the significance of the border between Germany and Austria, which, as is well known, would temporarily cease to exist just a year later. The regulation states that travelers - without special permission from the highest authority - may only bring in ten Reichsmarks per month. After briefly calculating the ridiculously low amount he could spend per day, the resourceful scholar Georg Rentmeister decides to stay in Bad Reichenhall and travel daily across the border to Salzburg.
