How can listening to music have healing effects? Far from physical measurement data that describe bodily effects in conventional music therapy research, the author shares his long-term experiences regarding the emotional impacts of healing music listening. He worked as a music therapist in neurological early rehabilitation with individuals in a vegetative state and with severe brain injuries, and later in end-of-life care on a palliative care unit. From his extensive empirical research, he develops practical approaches in this book on how listening to music can be healing, with specific guidance on the design and implementation of auditory music therapy. His own philosophy of listening, Ars Audiendi, which is based on principles of mindfulness and meditation, underlies this work. The book includes over 500 music examples from classical music, pop music, folk music, and sacred music.
