In addition to the "Sincere Tales of a Russian Pilgrim," this book, first published in 1907, is perhaps the most important work on the Jesus Prayer. The author, a Russian monk who lived on Mount Athos and later retreated as a hermit into the mountains of the Caucasus, is convinced that the name invoked in the Jesus Prayer is God Himself. By listening to the voice of God within oneself, one's own will and ego gradually recede: "To feel eternal life within oneself, one must always carry the venerable and all-encompassing name of Jesus Christ in one's mind, on one's lips, and in one's heart, and it sanctifies our entire being.".
