In the Federal Republic of Germany, there are not enough specialists available to provide care for those with statutory health insurance. The provision of psychotherapy is particularly problematic. Despite a formal oversupply in almost all planning districts of the statutory health insurance associations, the average waiting time for a psychotherapy appointment nationwide is at least three months. With the GKV Supply Structure Act that came into effect in 2012, the legislator aimed to address this situation and explore new ways to ensure comprehensive and needs-based medical care, especially in psychotherapy. Carmen Flecks not only highlights how little this goal has actually been achieved so far, but also presents the development of psychotherapy provision and demand planning in the German healthcare system.
