Netty Radvanyi likely wrote the manuscript for "Revolt of the Fishermen of S. Barbara" between the end of March 1927 and the spring of 1928. In July 1928, she signed a contract with the Gustav Kiepenheuer Verlag in Potsdam, and three months later, the book was published: a small-format paperback of 188 pages, credited to the pseudonym "Seghers." The text immediately attracted attention and made the author known in Germany, although the absence of her first name initially caused some confusion regarding her gender. When she was awarded the Kleist Prize for this book and for the story "Grubetsch," the decision was generally well-received.
