In 1947, Anna Seghers returned from her Mexican exile to a devastated country. Not only were the bombed cities foreign to her, but the people had also become strangers. For her early stories from this period, she drew on historical and mythological themes. With "The Argonauts' Ship," the tale of Jason's return home, Seghers wrote one of her most lyrical and enigmatic texts. Unique in her oeuvre are the two major novellas about the liberation struggles of black slaves in the Caribbean: "The Wedding of Haiti" and "Reintroduction of Slavery in Guadeloupe." Nowhere else does her exuberant imagination intertwine so closely with historical facts. For the first time, this volume presents a preliminary version of the story "The Light on the Gallows" from the Seghers estate. It was meant to be her third Caribbean novella, but Seghers abandoned the project.
