We were born into difficult times. At first, we played carefree in the streets and ran to greet the ice cream man as he passed through our neighborhood. We started school at Easter and learned to write with a pencil and slate. The war drew closer, and we experienced moments of fear in the bunker. When the Americans finally arrived, the war was over, but the hardship continued. Step by step, things improved. We went back to the theater in Saarbrücken, swooned over Audrey Hepburn at the cinema, and danced to rock 'n' roll. Eventually, we grew up, met our great love, and got engaged.
