According to Friedrich Nietzsche, the notes from the basement of the great Russian writer Fyodor Dostoevsky (1821-1881) are a true stroke of genius in psychology. Since their publication in 1864, this virtuously composed narrative has shaped large parts of Russian and European literature. In two narratively and stylistically distinct parts, Dostoevsky allows his nameless protagonist to observe the world and the abysses of his soul. A multifaceted and moving portrait emerges of a deeply embittered person, whose cynical withdrawal from the world is symbolized in his dark, self-imposed prison.
