Product details

The Sikh religion (from the Sanskrit word for "student, one in need of instruction") is a cross-denominational and interfaith form of Indian mysticism that emerged in the 15th century, rooted in the teachings of the charismatic community leader Guru Nanak (1469-1539) and his nine successors. In 1708, the last Guru, who did not appoint a successor, fell victim to an assassination. Sikh literature begins with the hymns of Guru Nanak. After his death, his successors began to establish traditions: non-authentic hymns were excluded, and the initially orally transmitted hymns were written down. This development culminated in 1604 with the Guru Granth Sahib (also known as the "Adi Granth"), the "Original Book" or more precisely: the "Teacher High Lord Book," a canonical collection of hymns that today occupies a central place in the liturgy of every Sikh shrine.
