A unique voice. At the age of 54, Helga Rohra was diagnosed with Lewy Body Dementia. She fell into a depression. When she first spoke publicly about her dementia in early 2010, she did so under the pseudonym "Helen Merlin." Since then, much has happened: Helga Rohra has become an activist, advocating for the rights of people with dementia: on the board of the Alzheimer Society Munich, in the media, and at dementia congresses. "I am demented, so what?" is her motto when she shares her experiences with non-demented individuals. This includes psychiatrists who publicly doubt her dementia diagnosis, or social workers who feel overwhelmed in their interactions with her. And neighbors and friends who helplessly stammer, "You poor thing, are you demented now too!" With sharp wit and a good dose of humor.
