Werner Renz, until 2016 a research associate and head of the archive at the Fritz Bauer Institute, examines in this volume the Nazi trials starting with the first Auschwitz trial under Attorney General Fritz Bauer in Frankfurt am Main, as well as the subsequent Frankfurt trials (1965 - 1981) up to the most recent proceedings against Demjanjuk, Hanning, and Gröning. He analyzes the respective legal interpretations and the legal practices of these trials and their resonance in the public sphere. An inconsistent judiciary in recent decades has led to a contradictory justice practice. Acquittals and case dismissals were seen by some critics as obstruction of justice. Countless Holocaust perpetrators remained unpunished. The book provides an overview of the history of the Frankfurt Auschwitz trials.
