Product details

The famous portfolio volumes "Executed Buildings and Designs by Frank Lloyd Wright" are an aesthetically overwhelming summary of all the works of the great architect up to the year 1909. They have often been referred to as one of the most significant publications of our century on modern architecture. First published in 1910-11 by the Ernst Wasmuth Verlag in Berlin, the 100 plates depicting Wright's built and unbuilt works convey the architect's vision of "organic architecture." No other architect of the 20th century - and only a few in history - could develop their ideas and work in such a coherent form as Wright. In the case of the portfolios, he added his own descriptions to the plates and wrote a special introduction, which also serves as a complex and important theoretical treatise on his relationship with the Western architectural tradition. In this volume, a reduced-format reprint, the plates have been compiled into one book to provide every architecture enthusiast and admirer of F. L. Wright with practical access to a great work of graphic art and a masterpiece of architectural history. A new introduction by Anthony Alofsin places the "Executed Buildings and Designs" in the historical context of their time. Through a meticulous examination of the relationships between Wright and the Ernst Wasmuth Verlag, he demonstrates that Wright conceived this work - despite its impact on European modern architects - primarily with regard to a newly designed democratic architecture for America and that its history is far more complex and dramatic than previously assumed.
