Stuart Hall is not only one of the most important founders of Cultural Studies. His influence is particularly crucial because he continually engages with new theoretical and political questions, transcends boundaries, and maintains the commitment to uphold the irreconcilable tension between theory and practice. For him, theory is always an intervening theory in the interest of liberation. If this tension is lost, one can certainly produce excellent intellectual work, but one loses the intellectual practice, the politics. Volume 1 provides an overview of Stuart Hall's diverse theoretical contributions: studies on Marxist theory, media and mass culture, the New Right and racism, as well as critical analyses of leftist politics. It represents a long-standing effort to popularize Cultural Studies in Germany.
