Product details
More and more couples and singles with a desire to have children are traveling abroad for reproductive medical treatment; this phenomenon is often referred to as reproductive tourism. However, the focus of Sven Bergmann's ethnographic study is not on vacation activities, but on alternative practices such as circumventing the ban on egg donation in Germany. The starting point of the investigation are two infertility clinics in Spain and the Czech Republic. Through what practices is kinship established in these clinics? What role do anonymity, similarity, and imagination play when gametes (sperm and eggs) or embryos are donated by unknown third parties? The author explores questions like these based on participant observation and interviews.
