The topic of musical memorization extends into many related fields. This work attempts to combine approaches from neurobiology and learning psychology with a music education perspective and discusses memorization and performance from memory as disciplines of musical practice and teaching. After examining the historical origins of memorized performance and characterizing contemporary concert practices, categories of perception and reproduction are formulated that can be applied to the description of memorization and other disciplines of musical practice. Memory can be specifically trained for the absorption of musical information; methods for acquisition and reinforcement are presented, which are illustrated with a musical example.
