The Economy of Time and Happiness and Other Stress Factors

Time is a crucial element in Malte Bartsch's (born 1984 in Braunschweig, lives and works in Berlin) work. His sculptures, installations, and video works revolve around the theme of time, addressing chance (in its temporality) and the concept of happiness - and what comes after those moments. Stress? The longing for more? The master's student of Manfred Pernice and graduate of Olafur Eliasson's Institute for Space Experiments explores these questions by reconstructing machines, designing mechanisms, and creating physical realities. Bartsch conceptualizes his works from the perspective of their viewers. He translates the acceleration of everyday life and the ubiquitous hustle of our late capitalist society into experimental setups in the exhibition space, intertwining memory, present experience, and potentials that lie in the future into inseparable events. The catalog "Automodus" is a tour through Bartsch's two-part exhibitions at the Municipal Gallery Wolfsburg and Braunschweig, documenting the artist's works in book form for the first time. It includes texts by Kristin Brüggemann, David Khalat, Manfred Pernice, Julian Pörksen, Bernard Vienat, and Katharina Weinstock.
