The pioneers of motorization produced more than just cars! At the beginning of the 20th century, the still young automobile industry tapped into another exciting market: transportation on water. The vehicles equipped with front engines, known as "autoboats," quickly became popular from 1900 onwards through spectacular races on the Seine and in front of Monaco, only to fade into obscurity just as rapidly after World War II. Famous manufacturers contributed to the boom: in Germany, for example, BMW, Daimler, DKW, Ford, and Maybach. However, autoboats also featured engines from Alfa Romeo, Austin, Chrysler, Duesenberg, Fiat, Hispano-Suiza, Isotta-Fraschini, Napier, Packard, Peugeot, Renault, and many more.
