They are considered the militant wing of social movements or as youth or subculture. However, there is also a vibrant production and reception of theory, for example within the framework of post-operaism, which offers more than mere advocacy of militancy. Autonomists repeatedly emerge: as independent movements, such as the Autonomia in Italy and the Autonomen in Germany, or as part of social movements, like the infamous Black Bloc in the USA, Europe, and most recently in Egypt. In Robert Foltin's book, those (revolutionary) theories that are discussed in autonomous scenes are presented, including value criticism and anti-Germanism, as well as currents that intervene in social movements, such as operaism, autonomous anti-imperialism, insurrectionalism, or anarchism. Through specific struggles and conflicts, the tension between an isolating subculture and mass effectiveness is addressed, as well as that between spontaneity and organization.
