Product details
The Sistine Madonna by Raphael is one of the most famous paintings of the Italian Renaissance. Created between 1512 and 1513 by Raffaelo Santi for the high altar of the San Sisto monastery church in Piacenza, the Sistine Madonna is a commissioned work by Pope Julius II that celebrates the Pope's victory over the French forces that invaded Italy and was donated on the occasion of the incorporation of the city of Piacenza into the Papal States in 1512. In 1753/54, the painting was acquired by Augustus III and brought to his collection in Dresden, where it can still be viewed today, after being held as war loot in Moscow from 1945 to 1955.
