Berlin, 1964. Three years after the construction of the Berlin Wall, art student Tobias makes the daring decision to dig a tunnel from West to East. The wall, which separates numerous families and friends, has long been a thorn in his side. On the other side, in the East of the city, his little sister Hanna dreams of escaping to the West. With the help of his best friend Mathias and many volunteers who soon join them, the risky plan is set into motion. Accompanied by the constant fear of being discovered, he and his helpers begin to dig a tunnel in strict secrecy, aiming to lead their relatives to freedom. Escape Tunnel to West Berlin is based on a true story, the tale of 'Tunnel 57'. On October 3rd and 4th, 1964, a total of 57 people escape through a 145-meter-long tunnel.
