In the fifth and final volume of the Klezmer series, the four musicians - the Baron, Jacoov, Tchokola, and Vincenzo - embark on a train journey through Russia, accompanying the poet Chaim Nachman Bialik to the village of Kishinev. There, during anti-Semitic pogroms, large parts of the Jewish population were brutally murdered, and the famous poet is tasked with recounting the massacres as a witness. The musicians must protect him not only from the dangers lurking in the Russian hinterland but also from his own fear of the responsibility that has been placed upon him. Joann Sfar once again manages to tell a profoundly distressing subject in a humorous and whimsical way in Klezmer 5, while still honoring its seriousness.
