The economic and financial crisis painfully highlighted to people that our global system is very fragile and disruptions in one area can lead to severe impairments of the overall system. The fragility of the world system was already a concern for some scientists in 1970, including Dennis L. Meadows, on behalf of the Club of Rome. They were worried about the world at that time, even though it was experiencing decades of unbridled growth. Welfare states were being expanded, providing a life of security. Cars were boxy, loud, large, and consumed a lot of cheap gasoline. Why should this system, which seemed superior to the political systems of Eastern Europe, be called into question? After a brief introduction to the Club of Rome, this paper will present the central statements regarding the future of humanity.
