Product details

In the present study, the author examines Georg Forster and his descriptions of Tahiti. However, his findings and representations must be understood in light of his cultural background and the knowledge of his time. The prevailing anthropological theories of the Enlightenment are also briefly discussed, as they structure Forster's thinking and he refers to them during his journey. It should not be forgotten that in Enlightenment thought, foreign peoples were often considered savages, with many being denied any form of culture. Eroticism and sexuality hold significant importance in Forster's work. This can only be fully understood by looking at enlightened Europe. For a thorough analysis of eroticism in the South Seas, it is insufficient to rely solely on Georg Forster's descriptions of the South Seas, which is why the author also draws on other sources.
