Product details

In the tension between societal conservatism and advancing industrialization, the movement of Expressionism emerges in the German-speaking world at the beginning of the 20th century. The rebellion against bourgeois norms manifests in art as a visual revolt. Artist communities such as Die Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter establish a visual language that, unlike purely representational arts, places subjective sensation at its center. Through heightened colors and abstract forms, reality is depicted as an individual experience. Artists: Cuno Amiet, Max Beckmann, Paul Camenisch, Lyonel Feininger, Conrad Felixmüller, Erich Heckel, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, August Macke, Franz Marc, Albert Müller, Otto Mueller, Gabriele Münter, Emil Nolde, Max Pechstein, Christian Rohlfs, Hermann Scherer, Karl Schmidt-Rottluff, Alexej von Jawlensky.
