Louise Michel (1830-1905), the icon of the Paris Commune of 1871, was seen by some as a bloodthirsty wolf and by others as the great citizen, the red virgin, the good Louise. Her courage in battle and her fearlessness in court are legendary. Sentenced to deportation to New Caledonia, Louise Michel sought contact with the indigenous population. She learned the Kanak language and conveyed their myths and culture in two writings. Until her death, the island remained a place of longing for her. Although Louise Michel never missed an opportunity to die in battle, she lived to a ripe old age. Eva Geber has written a biographical novel based on this. For it, she listened to Louise Michel's fictional monologue about her tumultuous life and recorded it along with historical facts. For the chapter on deportation, the author included the legends of the indigenous people as they were passed down by Michel.
