In an office on Wall Street, a young man is hired as a copyist. His name is Bartleby, and as a conscientious, ambitious, and tireless employee, he is well-liked by both employers and colleagues. However, out of the blue, Bartleby refuses to do any further work with the polite explanation: "I would prefer not to." And he not only refuses to work, but soon he also stops leaving the office. Sociologist Max Weber viewed bureaucracy as the best form of governance, as it is efficient and egalitarian without resorting to direct violence. In his short story "Bartleby the Scrivener," Herman Melville preemptively critiques Weber's views by turning an inconspicuous scrivener into an unbearable disruption for the bureaucratic machine. Hero of resistance or asocial oddball? Illustrator José Luis Munuera does not answer this question for us, but he prompts us to reconsider it through his pointed interpretation.
