A dead man is discovered in a lagoon near Reykjavík. The man appears to have been murdered. Commissioner Erlendur begins the investigation. The victim seems to be an American from the nearby military base. However, Erlendur receives no information in response to his questions there. When an Icelander identifies the deceased as her brother, an aircraft mechanic, the suspicion grows that he fell victim to a military secret.
