Constructing and playfully exploring the world. Why should you build with children? Because children naturally want to build. Because sometimes they need adults as supporters, advisors, teachers, and admirers of their creations. And because adults can provide new exciting materials. Because what children do and experience while building contains much more of a spirit of inquiry than just experiments. Because building forces one to engage with an idea and work on it, often to the brink of despair, and then back to a fulfilling result. Because building is about imagination and creativity. But also about new insights: How does something work, how does it hold up, how does it roll? Building makes you smart, I assert. That’s why I want to show you that children always find space, materials, and opportunities to creatively stage their ideas if only they are given the chance.
