Increasingly, solving water management tasks requires the search for and implementation of new innovative concepts. This particularly includes ecological, circular-oriented systems for wastewater management. Wastewater and feces are regarded as valuable resources that can be treated, recovered, and utilized as needed. Rainwater management is also incorporated into such concepts. In 2004, the DWA established a specialist committee, the results of which are summarized in a DWA thematic volume on novel sanitation systems. This teaching script is based on that foundation and is published with the kind permission of the DWA. It specifically addresses the partial streams of domestic wastewater, the possibilities for collection, transport, and treatment, as well as the handling of products from novel sanitation systems.
