Starting from the observation of philosopher Jacques Derrida that heritage is always also a task, the third volume of the publication series of the graduate college "Identity and Heritage" focuses on the social and cultural practices of referencing pasts and identities. A (cultural) heritage must be acted upon in order to bring it into existence. It only constitutes itself in the act of (non-)inheriting, meaning in the interplay with the practices carried out with and on it. Nevertheless, it is only through their connection with the material remnants and traditions of the heritage that an appropriation or rejection of the past is possible, as well as the continuation and rewriting of an already existing heritage. These processes are not arbitrary: The possibilities for interpretation and meaning are restricted, expanded, and directed by the social, political, cultural, economic, and technical conditions of the present, as well as by the history and materiality of the heritage. Therefore, heritage and heritage processes must necessarily be related to one another.
